On May 5, 1978, Pete Rose became the 13th player in MLB history to get his 3000th hit. Shortly later, a new record was brewing. It started on June 14, 1978 when Rose singled off Dave Roberts (Cubs pitcher). Rose then got a hit in every single game he played until August 1, making a run at Joe DiMaggio’s 37 year unchallenged 56-game hitting streak. The streak was quiet but at around 30 games the media took notice and followed him to every game. The only scare happened on July 19 against the Phillies when Rose was hitless going into the ninth with his team trailing. He walked in the eight and the streak was looking woozy. But the Reds somehow batted through their lineup and Rose had another chance in the ninth. Rose ended up bunting a perfect single which extended the streak to 32. He then tied Willie Keeler’s 1897 single season NL record at 44 games but on August 1, the streak ended on a sour note from Rose feeling slighted by the opposing pitcher (Gene Garber of Atlanta). According to Rose, they treated the situation “like it was the ninth inning of the 7th game of the World Series” and added that “Phil Niekro would have given me a fastball to hit.” This game uniform was worn on July 31, 1978. The jersey and pants are from the game that put Rose on top of the record books with the NL record of 44 games with a hit. The pullover jersey shows Wilson size 44 tagging in interior left tail with a 78 - 3 tag. Pants show 14 - 24-1/3 - 78 - 3 - Wilson with black felt tip number 32-1/2 because these were custom made for him (size wise). Important to note, that the uniform was worn multiple times during the season after the record game and shows season use. It shows dirt still visible and a noticible repair in the leg. Rose signed and inscribed the front of the shirt: "44 CONSECUTIVE GAMES WITH A HIT A N.L. RECORD - (dated) JULY 31, 1978." A roses for Rose presentation picture from the game day is included for the photo matchup.
